hi guys just looking for more advice really, has anyone done a mark 3 2.0l 8v engine swap into a mk2 if so please could you give me some info on how you achieved this, what parts were the same, what parts were different, and generally a how to would be great. it wont stay a gti, iam putting a 34/34 webber on supplied by chris. any pics are also apreciated. ive had a look on the net thinking this would be quite common but it seems people dont do this swap and prefer the 16v lump. any info greatly apreciated. regards darren.
This is actually quite common, usually done with a 2l bottom end with the original head.
Check out the following

It’s very common, use 2ltr headgasket put 1.8 gti head onto 2.0 block use ether the 2.0 or 1.8 ancillaries, wang in a fast road cam for good measure and your away. lot of ppl also put 2.0 bottom ends on 16vs
With 020 (rodchange)box it fouls one of the webs on the block (02C clears it fine) you’ll soon see what I mean when offering the gearbox up to the engine, I rounded the edge off the transfer case and then took the rest of the metal out the offending web on the block, I have piccys somewhere, I will try & find them later

Please do Danny and post them on here, this is good info that is probably not available any where else.
pictures would be great, i like pictures, i get bored easy thats why i read (i mean) look at the sun newspaper lol[]
btw Darren as you are running a carb and not injection you will need to run a distributer with a vacuum advance/retard which the 2.0 litre doesnt have, so I think you will have to run an 1800 dizzy which does have it, which means you have to change the intermediate shaft, dont worry there is one here you can have if you need it, or you could use the one (and the dizzy)from your spare GU code engine
You might also need a spacer ring to fit the 1.8 dizzi. TSR used to do them, but they went bust…. I think they got bought, so they may still have the spacer ring available….
iirc the 2.0 intermediate shaft dosen’t cause any issues, if using carb dizzy you fit the gear from the 2.0 dizzy to the 1800 dizzy you are using and then make a spacer ring, somtimes made out of 2.0 dizzy. haven’t had chance to find piccys yet may
There are some awsome guides here, our thanks to skatterd for finding & posting the original link

After looking through these I would say they appear to have it extreemly well covered.
Look at what I just picked up for £50 []
Not really a looker, is it?
Obviously this is what I’m here for:
Although it’s done 170k it still pulls very well and cleanly and will pull from 20mph in 4th – that’s the torque from the long-block, I guess.
[]
Work cut out now then!
your going to do the same as me then?
It’s a similar project. Mine should be running rear discs and a cable-change Passat Syncro/Golf Rallye ‘box, when it comes out of the garage. It is already running numerous other tweaks, too.
I was just cruising through the linked threads above and noticed that none of them really mentions wiring – after all, most 2l conversions are completed on Golf GTIs – no need to worry about that pesky wiring, when it’s all already done for you, now, is there?
As the MFA on the Passat says it’s running 35-37MPG average at the moment, I think it would be a pity to slap a carb on it. It’ll make the conversion more complex, but it should be easier to tweak and tune if it’s on injection. Now the question is really, leave the head on, or hunt out a crossflow head…… h’mmmmmm, decisions, decisions.
the wireing isn’t exactly hard, it very easy on a 90 speck it’s plug and play pre 90 theres a bit of fiddeling involved.
chris has a crossflow head.
