I think it should be possible to sort something for early next summer, this will give people with ‘temporarily’ off road Syncros a chance to prepare,
If there is enough interest we could possibly with an early block booking for ferrys, accommodation, etc keep the prices down to a realistic level, as in 40 pounds return on the ferry for a car and up to 5 people
So come on Syncronauts let me know what you think, and if you are up for it? []
I wonder how fast we could get a Syncro round in?
You must watch this video, its frightening, especially the motor bikes who are not looking in their mirrors and are defo not going anywhere as fast as they think they are.

The ‘Ring is well worth a visit, but given that these Golfs are 14-15 years old I’d recommend some serious preparation.

It will eat your brakes, it will eat your tyres, your fuel gauge will become magnetically attracted to the red. It will show up unexpected faults as EVERYTHING (except maybe the ashtray) gets put through the mill massively. If you watch either of the Top Gear features (using new cars, note) you’ll find that the Jag throws an electronic wobbly and the ABS on the Transit leaves early. Now think about those faults – they were on NEW vehicles, not 15 year old ones.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll be quick though. Do that and you’ll be talking to the armco very very quickly and YOU have to PAY for the damage that you cause.

Oh and it costs 15 Euros per lap.

Let me know the date, I’ll see you guys there, be in no doubt of that.

Basically something will break, btw is there a well stocked vw garage near the ring ? I’m sure I’ll be requiring it but who said it had to be golf aren’t all syncros allowed

Ben is a very knowledgeable bloke, if a little odd in person.

By the way if we eat in the Pistenklause of an evening Sabine (who is part-owner) serves drinks – the guy I went with last time spent most of the evening dribbling !

The Blau Eche (sp?) in Adenau is a lovely hotel. Klaus the owner is a real character too – he’s done lots of testing for companies on the ‘Ring and has an old Alpine he gets out occasionally too.

Spectating is actually one of the best parts of being out there – be ready to walk some distance to points like the Karussell – the walk is well worth it to watch the lines people take (and see how badly some people get it wrong !!).

So, apart from me, Chris (and Danny, obviously) is anyone else *actually* up for this ?

I’d love to do a lap or two…. depends on time and money constraints tho! Also ye olde syncro is completely standard… would be interesting! Does anyone know what the top speed for a syncro is supposed to be?

Actually, my girlfriend has been working on the bugatti veyron, maybe we can convince them to let us play with it?! The one they have has golf clocks in it, so its at least part golf….. []

It varies depending on which motor you have, the GU and GX both supposedly have 90bhp
the Syncro GT has the 1P motor with 98bhp, while the G60 has 160 bhp.
The VW performance figures are as follows
GU (carb) 178 kph = 111.25 mph, 0 to 100kph (62mph) in 11.3 seconds
GX (K-jet) 175 kph = 109.375 mph, 0 to 100kph (62mph) in 12 seconds
1P (digi2) 180 kph = 112.5 mph, 0 to 100kph (62mph) in 11.1 seconds
PG ( G60) 213 kph = 133.125 mph, 0 to 100kph (62mph) in 8,3 seconds

I suspect it’s quite different than what the speedo shows but they seem to happily go (and stay) off the clock. First time on the m6 expressway tested that to the full

yeah mine seems to like just over 120mph… kinda surprised me when i floored it to see what it was! wonder if that really is how fast its going… have to find someone with a new car and GPS to test it i guess…

Top speed is fairly immaterial on the ‘Ring. You do need punchy accelleration and good brakes though, as it’s mostly corners and hills – lot of hills !

As a minimum I’d fit new pads and GTI disks on the front, check the rear shoes and drum condition, change the brake fluid and give the engine a full service and tune before heading out. Oh and did I mention tyres ? Best fit some new ones

I’ll be taking a brace of Syncros, although one will mostly be there to take motorbikes out there for some mates!

Note the 2006 calendar isn’t available until somewhen in Feb 2006, so best keep dates provisional until then, or you may find there’s an event on during that weekend or something daft.
