Hello all, long time not on here – back in syncro land again – over the next few weeks will be converting Syncro to early electrics digifant 8v GTI – will post stuff according to progress – anyway, got a complete (apart from hub rotors) rallye ABS setup in the garage, the one with the ENORMOUS pump unit.
Bought it because it was cheap – need to know if it going to be practical to retro-fit to the syncro or not – as it’s from a rallye , it must be from a LHD – the pump unit has a pushrod connector at the back which I’m presuming goes to the brake pedal – froom memory I seem to recall seeing the pump unit on the LHS of the engine bay (i.e. over the gearbox). If this is right, then it means that there is no way to fit this to a RHD vehicle, as it doesn’t appear that there is enough room on the RHS (where the existing master cylinder resides).
If anyone can shed any light on this I’d be grateful,
thanks,
Chris.
You are correct in every detail, there is no way this will fit to the right hand drive Golf 2,
if you really want to fit ABS I suggest you start looking at the Golf 3 as this had a totally different ABS system fitted to the RHD cars the MARK20-I ATE, this was available in 2 versions normal ABS or ABS + EDL, and looking at the drawings in ETKA it would appear to fit without to many problems as it is a totally seperate unit, and the master cylinder servo unit sits in its normal RHD place and the ABS unit sits across on the left hand side of the bulkhead over the gearbox.
Thanks Chris – that’s what I thought. Anyone after a full rallye ABS setup (LHD…)??[]
Collected early Mk2 8v GTI on Saturday so will start swapping bits onto syncro tomorrow. Going to start at the back with the fuel pumps and associated wiring and work forwards. GTI has all interior stripped already so is a bit easier to see what’s going on.
Am planning on swapping nearly all of wiring loom over except for reverse switch / diff lock, will remove that from syncro loom and splice it into GTI loom so it’s as original as poss.
Looking for a rallye / passat cable change box (again) if anyone has one kicking around…
Will post photos and problems as I go if anyone’s interested..
Chris.
what year is the GTI? I may have a 120/125 bhp chip for it.
To make life easier why bother splicing looms together when there is no need, if both your syncro and the gti loom are early electrics, just plug in the required parts.
The loom in the arse end of the car is identical as you have probaly noticed the fuel pumps have there own mini loom going to the fuse box, simply fit that into your fusebox and put the required relays in place, you can also pull all the carb related wiring and drop the digifant engine loom in and plug straight in.
hello mate,
when u say u have the full abs setup do you mean rear wishbones (or whatever the abs sensor attaches to) front hub carriers and all associated wiring?
If you cant use this would you consider selling on? I need the abs sensors and appropriate mounting points to install a haldex controller.
many thanks -Richard
Hi morefire – there are no mechinical parts with the kit I have it’s all of the electric loom, through to the sensors, the ECU, pump & cylinder etc. As I stated, the hub rotors that the sensors monitor are not included.. I’m not sure what the sensors are attached to – can anyone with an ABS rallye shed any light?
The full loom is included with relays etc.
PM me and I’ll send you some photos.
Danny – I got an early electrics GTI so it should plug and play into the early (both ’89) fuse box on the syncro – the only bit that will need retaining from the syncro loom is the gearbox reverse switch – I am happy to splice this into the GTI digifant loom to keep the rear diff circuit factory…
Chris.
