I’m really stuck!
I just bought a Golf 1.8 Syncro which was running strangely.
I had put it down to a badly set up Weber but following a session swapping the plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm for new the problem is still there.
Basically it runs like a pig – no power and it cuts out under acceleration. Odd thing is it seems to run better with the ignition timing backwards (1-2-4-3 instead of 1-3-4-2).
I suspect the belt has slipped and the cam timing is out but as I have never fixed this before I really can’t be sure and don’t want to screw something else up.
Really desperate as the car is needed for the missus.
Is there anyone in Notts that could have a look/advise/help?
Thanks
Paul

Do you have a Haynes manual? cos you can set your GU code motor up from this.
Seconded – you’ll be able to check it’s all groovy with a hanyes. I have, it then ran ok.
Got hold of a ratty one today.
I think either the belt has slipped or its been timed 180 degrees out.
Going to have a go and replace the timing belt and drive belt at the same time. Hope that cures it!

I booked it into the local garage (I just didn’t have time to sort it myself as I am working 18hr days – typing this from work!) and 6 hours of work later it runs again!
The entire timing setup was begun from scratch and now it runs a treat. Loads of power throughout the rev range – quite impressed.
I’m going to adjust the Weber now and see if I can maximise on the tune up.
