which is best?
What do you want from the car?
That will help with your engine choice.
Do you want outright power. Or best ££ per power. Or maybe something a bit different. Or do you want reliable power.
The Dubweiser car is actually a 5cyl audi 20v unit, and quattro running gear.
There is a build thread of a mk2 golf with the same setup, to give you an idea of the work that’s envolved

Couple of awesome video’s in there too
the dubweiser mk1 is a 5 cylinder car, inline engine loads of work to plant that in a car, tunnel needs to be changed the subframe needs to changed mounting points need to be changed whole front end neds to be changed
now funny you ask about a dog box i have something close 6spd quiafe 4wd box with a vr6 housing also a 20vt head gasflowed with schrick cams
Always remember that out of Cheap, Reliable, Powerful. You have to pick which two you want cos you can’t have all three.
nutter4x4 you seem to have blown apart almost every type of vag gearbox, [] He certainly has [}]
at the mo i`m using a hybrid 02M, seems ok at the mo, handling the launches well and 4wd wheel spins, roads a bit damp at the mo thou, needing some nice 16″ rims for it to help with the torque conversion from the 15″ alloys help stop the wheel spin a bit
my quaife will handle 450ftlb all day long, its the transfer box is the weak point, at the mo it`ll bolt straight on to a vr6, but it does need the diff plate replacing because the bolt that goes through driveshaft flange was ripped clean out when the transfer box split open
there is no such thing as a 50/50 power split its allways dynamic,
my guesss is nutters quaife would need bell houseing swapping over from a 4 pot 02c box then it’d fit your motor or any 4 cyl.
engine wise i like the 16 valve motors
i thought with haldex you can make up a controller or buy, to enable 50/50 and even shut off power to the rear.
i was doing some maintanace on my syncro the other day on a ramp, not good, i spotted welds, worrying welds.
the gearbox has been stitch welded to the transfer case, the engines done 140,000 miles and had the clutch done once as far as the service history shows. ive put lots of stress through it before knowing so im not too woried about it falling apart but if the clutch goes i could be opening a can of worms trying to replace it. the engine however is pretty good and reliable.
being realistic now, im not going to have the parts or money together before bug jam for a full on conversion,
i now want to do it in two stages if possible, drivetrain this year, some sort of boosted engine next year also by doing it this way and spreading it out nothings rushed or compromised.
