Sat in the underside of the inlet manifold on a GU carb motor there is a electrical heater which helps prevent carb icing in really cold weather, I will try & find a photo of one,
to improve manifold flow these can be trimmed down slightly hence the name
hey thats cool i no what one is how much do you normally shave them down you just do it on a grinder yes? 2-3 cm or more than that?
I cut off about 15mm from mine, using a hacksaw – it’s more accurate and less prone to mucking things up!
Make sure you clean all of the swarf off the thing before you put it in – there’s nothing to stop it getting hosed into the engine otherwise!

I have acquired one of these dizzis now – looks like I have the next modification ready to go on the car!
I also have the number for a guy who says he’s got lots of Golf1 1.6GTI motors lying around. Can any of the resident experts let me know whether these work on a GU motor?
Put a 2 liter motor in it it!
but failing that the EG code motor is the one to have as with the std k-jet it produces 110 bhp from its 1600 cc, but there are so many parts no longer available that it it probably not worth following up on.
Sorry, Chris, I didn’t make it clear (I was tired, it was late etc)- the question is whether the HEAD off one of these motors could be fitted to a GU block.
yes littel gain over a pb head other than max revs are a bit higher
So the head off these 1.6GTI motors is BETTER than the PB and EV heads and works OK and won’t screw up the compression ratio on the GU motor?
I dont know about that, but a head that will fit is from the Golf 1800 GTI DX motor, this has solid cam followers and will allow you to run a wilder cam, but any gains will only be at over 6000 revs,
I have a nice non progressive (ie both throttles open together) Weber DCNF carb here for you, or even a pair of them if you like? now that will put a [] on your face, well at least until you have to refil the petrol tank [:0]
btw the DCNF is the vertical version of the DCOE []
Other than that I would consider going injection as 125bhp is easily obtainable then, first off though I would be looking at the exhaust downpipe as the RHD one will reduce the effectiveness of any mod you make by at least 50% if not more, I will get a LHD one in the post to you, to see if you can adapt it in any way to make it fit.
This now leaves me with an issue as I have a head from a 1.6GTi that was supposed to be going on my Scirocco, so it would possibly fit the Jetta as well?
The head is ported/polished, flowed inlet/exhaust, 285 cam and also has a 4 branch attached.
The solid lifter head will go on hydro lifter block 4 branch manifold will not fit the syncro tho
The advantage of solid lifter head is cams can have more agressive ramp angels, more cams avalibe , can rev higher. to see these adavntages you need to be building a rev monster tho.
If I was building an engine I wouldn’t bother to have the work done to a solid lifter head to see these advantages as have to spend over 1K on head work before the differance woudl really start to show. but if had one it’d get used, if I wanted a high revving solid lifter engine I’d start from a hydro lifter crossflow head and have it converted to solid lifter. but those sort of engine cost about 5k to build
can someone tell me if the hydraulic tappets from a gu head are the same as the ones in the gti head as the ones in my gu head have done alot less miles than the ones in th gti head.
