Does anyone know how to read fault codes on a mk2 golf 1.8 8v?
if its like any of my old cars then I assume it is the flashes on the display.
When I turn the ignition on but not starting the engine, the battery light illuminates as does the temperature light and ignition light to the right of it,
the temp and ignition lights flash together 3 times before the temp light stops, the ignition continues to flash. any ideas?
There are no fault codes on a Golf 2, they are far to early to have them!
To have a fault code you need OBD, (on board diagnostics)and to have OBD you need an on board computer which I can promise you your GU motor code Syncro doesn’t have in any way shape or form.
What you are seeing is an early form of circuit (warning light) check,
the three lights you actually have when you turn the ignition on are,
1) Upper (flashes and stops) water temperature w/l check.
2) Lower left (does not flash) Battery/alternator charge w/l check.
3) Lower right (continues to flash) oil pressure w/l check.
As long as all 3 warning lights go out within a few seconds of starting the engine then everything is ok!
Thank you for the mail chris, I have another query do you know exactly which make of distributor goes in my vehicle? I have looked all over the thing and cant see a name, only numbers.
The reason I ask is that I believe I may have the wrong dizzy cap fitted, I checked the spark coming from all the leads today as the cylinder 2nd in from the cambelt end is not firing all the time, when I took the HT lead off and checked against the car to see a spark, I noticed it was intermittently sparking whereas all the others were fine and continually sparking. I swapped other the ht leads and spark plugs in a different order but it still happened on that cylinder on that lead. I am a bit confused.
i manged to do an etching in my lunch break and found that my distributor is a valeo unit which is not helpfull as all my motor factors here said it should be bosch or ducellier.[!]
The Dizzy for a GU code motor when fitted to a Syncro can be either from Bosch, Ducellier or Valeo, and they appear to have fitted whichever they had in their hand at the time!
More confusingly VW use the same part nr (026 905 205AC) for all 3 of the dizzys from the different manufacturers even though the dizzy caps & rotor arms are different!
I dont know if this will help at all but here are the three manufacturers codes for their dizzys and the correct VW part nr for the Dizzy cap & rotor arm.
Dizzy 1) —- Bosch
Dizzy 1A) — Ducellier —- 026 905 206AC — 026 905 207A —- 026 905 225K
Dizzy 1AB) – Bosch
Dizzy 1AC) – Valeo
As well as the above differences the Dizzys also have different vacuum advance units, hall sender units, impulse rotors & internal dust covers.
I just read your last post & it looks as though you have Dizzy 1AC fitted []
Dizzy 1AC) – Valeo
