hi guys I am i need of a rallye gearbox in good condition, transfer box would be good to if possible.
thanks Mike
Passat G60 syncro also used the same box. The ratios vary depending on the code on the gearbox, but they are physically the same.
Do you mean the O2C type?
As far as I know it’s an 02A, the code on the box is ASU. don’t know exactly what has gone wrong only I have no 4th gear. It feels as if its going into gear, just no drive. all the other gear are ok but the box sounds terrible. any ideas?
mike
Its an O2C, thats the 4wd version of the O2A box, the ASU code was only fitted to the Rallye & there are 2 versions of this box, The later one has oilways between the main box & the transfer box, do you know the full gearbox code including the numbers?
As for having no 4th gear, you have stripped either the teeth of one of the cogs or done the selector mechanism in, however if as you say it feels like it is going into gear then it is very likely that you have stripped the teeth from one of the cogwheels, try draining the oil and see if any of the gear teeth come out with it?
Please dont drive it any further as the loose teeth will eventually get caught up and wreck the other gears or can even be pushed through the casings and destroy them.
btw Whereabouts in the UK are you based? I may be interested in your box if there any good internals left intact.
Hi Chris,
the box code is ASU30069,
I was having a good time with a carrera turbo, some XXXX pulled out in front of us and we had to slow, I dropped into 4th, waited for the idiot to pull in and floored it,then bang I thought the turbo boost pipe had come off…..I had to drive the car about 20 miles after the incident in 5th expecting the box to lock up, I guess I’ve stripped the gear, I’m sure the selector is ok from the feel of it.
I live in Dover Kent. depending on what the outcome is you are welcome to the internals.
I’m tempted to install a different ratio set so I can get to 60 in 2nd gear just depends on if a gearbox turns up or I have to strip it down ….
Mike
You have definitely stripped 4th gear, I can do you an exchange reconditioned box if you like please e-mail me for details
Thanks for the offer Chris, I have a feeling the price might just be out of my league, I will see what the dreaded ebay has to offer. the ironic thing is 2 weeks or so a guy was selling a rallye box with 20vt internals….sods law again!
BTW can you still get hold of the 25mm passat synco estate anti roll bar? if so can you sort me out a price please?
Any 02C will fit as long as you use the matching Angle drive. All the Passat G60 Syncros used the 02C cable shift gearbox, and it is essentially the same as the Rallye box except that you may get different ratios. I would assume that you have a better chance of finding a cheap Passat gearbox than a Rallye box.
The ASU code box has a cast iron transfer case instead of the normal aluminium one,
Just as you say Les the ratios are different, strangely enough the Rallye has a lowered 5th gear!
As for availability, I have 2 second hand ASU code Rallye gearboxes for sale here at the moment. I can get one delivered to you in the early hours of the 1st of november if you like? as Mark (slateford) will be getting off the the Dunkirk/Dover ferry in his Rallye at about midnight on the 31st Oct on his way home to Edinburgh after a visit over here.
Do any of the cast iron angle drives have the oil passages, or are they all the early style that require their own oil? I’ve seen several of them, but never out of a car and I was wondering if they can be fitted to the newer 02C gearboxes.
Chris what do I say to that offer….nah no thanks!!! not likely…
seriously, one availible and delivered almost to my door what can I say…
how much do you want for an asu box, bearing in mind you can have the gear clusters out of my old box…
My plan hopefully is to get back on the road with another gearbox and use my original casing (if ok) and install a 20vt gear cluster at my leisure, with photo’s of the old one with the damage then the install of the turbo cluster. ( i think I’m going to need lots of advice when I do it.
cheers mike
