I’m looking at changing my tank from golf2 to golf3, in order to ditch the under-car fuel pump assembly, and go with the later in-tank high-pressure pump. All depends on the similarity between golf3 and golf2 boot floors. Can anyone tell me if the golf3 syncro fuel tank will fit in the golf2 syncro?
In a word no, the Golf 3 syncro tank has an extra sticky out part that fouls the Golf 2 Syncro underbody,
What you can do is to cut the small pump neck out & (Plastic – ABS) weld the wider G3S neck in, its not that difficult,
I have done it to a couple of tanks now, but there again in a previous life I used to be a plastics engineer. []
Ah ok, cheers. I was hoping it might go in unmolested. Never mind, it’s 100 euros shipped so a little pricey for cutting up. In that case I guess a standard fwd m3 tank would do the job instead. What do you use for the heat source when welding abs, and do you use a filler rod?
With filler rod

The neck from any wide neck tank can be welded into the G2S tank in place of the small neck.
Ta, yes I spotted the golf 3 one earlier, which is what brought on the thought of fitting it. Quite different then. It’s also occurred to me that the golf 3 in-tank pump is only 3 or 4 bar for digifant or whatever, whereas mine needs to be 6 bar for the kjet, so another stumbling block. I might be better off just making a shield to protect the original pump, and leaving it where it is under the car.
i did use a walbro in tank, a 255. it goes up to 8bar of pressure.
that works with a full tank of gas. but if your down to about 1/4 than it gets tricky in the corners. you can solve this with a fuel catch tank and use a external fuelpump in the car.
I wanted to do the same, i already bought a g3s tank ……..
Sow now i know it wont fit.
but chris if you weld in the big hole, is there a bajonet fitting on the bottom of the g2s tank so you can fit the g3 fuel pump?

No there isn’t, but you cut that out of the 2wd tank & glue it in the bottom of the syncro tank.
