After owning a standard right hand drive Golf syncro for the last couple of years the idea finally got the better of me and when an relativly complete Audi S3 popped up at a resonable price the decision was made.
So what I’m thinking of is (ideas and comments more than welcome!!!)
1. Haldex Conversion – parts from dutchbuild.
2. 5×100 hubconversion with 288 VR6 front and VR6 Syncro rear (a little help here would be appreciated muchly!!!).
3. Mk3 dash conversion (climate control wanted and would like to try to modify for S3 clocks).
4. ABS (ideas please!! can’t find any diagrams of rear sensor location).
5. Using as much of the Audi’s wiring as possible.
So far that is the basis of what I would like to do, one of the stumbling blocks at the moment though is how to get the correct size downpipe to fit!!!
Anyone out there done this kind of conversion to a right hand drive standard Syncro help and advice would be welcome.
why the vr6 syncro stuff? only because this is extremely hard to find, why not just draft in all the s3 items, rear beam will be the hardest bit !?
Due to lack of any workshop space what so ever I need to be able to work on part and bolt straight on!!
So far so good I seem to have sourced many of the rare rear end parts!! I wanted to go for this option for additional stability from the wide track conversion and to increase braking capacity.
Updates to follow and I’m sure there will be more questions to ask as this project progresses.
The VR6 Syncro rear hubs & drive shafts should already be fitted with the relevant ABS sender/sensors.
Hello mate. I’m doing this at the moment. I’m fitting everything I can from the S3 into the syncro.
I got the dutchbuild gearbox mount to save time but made my own haldex mount using dutchbuild’s example….

I’ve got the mk3 syncro rear arms and have just put the wheel bearings and hubs in. I’m having a bit of trouble fitting the ABS rings over the driveshaft CV – looking like I’ll have to get it machined back a bit to fit the rings. I’m using the S3 front and rear brakes too.
I’ll update my build thread when I get some spare time.
I’ve also fitted the S3 interior and am about to fit the S3 dash. All this depends on how comfortable you are with cutting chunks out of your car and welding them back in.
sounds a bit like my current build. (3 door rhd shell)
Haldex conversion using dutchbuild brackets, S3 Bam engine on S3/Mk4 mounts and a custom dogbone mount, custom saddle bag type ali fuel cell which will accept standard s3 fuel pumps, motorsprt custom cages roll cage, s3 dash, 280mm rear brakes – fronts undecided yet, s3 dash (so i can use the lovely S3 clocks, have the factory immobiliser. It will use the factory ecu and haldex control (lat acc sensors and yaw sensor/ steering angle sensor) with an aftermarket haldex controller, mk3 vr6 trailing arms and widetrack front end. etc etc etc….
Sounds like a great project mate. Mine has been on hold for the last year as I’ve been trying to do my house up. Once I get moved in I’ll crack on with the car again
Have you got a thread for your build? I was toying with the idea of plastic welding the fuel pump opening from the S3 fuel tank to the golf one so that I can use the S3 pump but a custom tank sounds much better. Are you making it yourself?
i have a build thread on clubgti, as for the tank i had someone make it for me, i cannot tig, mine is being mounted under where the rear seat base would be (slightly raised seat base to clear the tank) i really didn’t want it behind the rear axle for safety reasons and weight distribution
Question guys how did you mount the front end up.
Ive an ary engine 1.8 20vt im trying to put in my mk2 syncro.
I Have haldex conversion bracket for the rear from eptech but struggling to mount engine in the bay.
Cant seem to get front box mount past oil filter please help 😉
