I have a knocking from the front end of the Golf.
It happens on speed humps and potholes and shows as a large clunk from the front right wheel area.
Only thing that shows up is the strut tops.
One (ns) is raised and the ring plate bit is approx 1cm above the body panel under the bonnet. Its pretty stiff too.
The other (os) is flush with the body and movable (it twists).
Is this symptomatic of the strut top bush failing? Are the Mk3/G60 bushes worth fitting?
Yeah, that’ll be a failed top mount. I just replaced mine with the direct part – it’s going to be much better than the ones you’re replacing, simply because it’s doing it’s job properly.
Thanks Thomas – ever the helpful hand on here.
I’ll get the garage to sort it and swap the tired springs at the same time as the arse is way too low.
Whats the deal on springs? I have a set of new -40mm for a standard 2wd.
Can I use them and chop down the rears?
The reason the arse sags so badly is that the springs aren’t progressive, so all the coils sag at the same rate. I fitted Golf3 VR6 Syncro springs on mine – I think the rears went straight on with new oil dampers (all that I could find) and I think I (eventually) cut about 3 coils off the front and replaced the front dampers with Bilstein gas units. While you’re doing all that you really need to replace the rear ARB with a Rallye one – it sorts the handling out massively by removing the pig-understeer.
Thanks for that.
The handling isn’t THAT bad, maybe a bit sluggish but its a change from the Syncro Doka
There are a few other issues to sort but the whole 4wd thing has me hooked now and I love the grip. The ‘issues’ will be attended to ASAP and then onto sorting the dynamics/cosmetics.
It’s not that the handling is BAD to start with, it’s just dull. The ARB makes it fun.
I’ll keep an eye out for one. Any pointers on how they bolt up?
You can see the rear ARB mounting points here

Or from time to time I have 2nd hand ARBs for sale
I’ll be in touch as soon as the rest of the suspension is sorted Chris.
Also worth checking the manifold c-clamps – mine made wierd clunks around corners till we figured it was the exhaust knocking against the tunnel on corners (because of old, tired c-clamps).
I have a second hand Rallye rear anti roll bar here, it is complete with the 4 mounting rubbers, the 2 inner brackets & the brake regulator arm, it is in good condition with some surface rust, but will function perfectly, I would like 42.50 pounds for it please, including the postage to the UK. this is Also posted in items for sale
