hey ive just put a gti head on my syncro with a 276 cam o and its on a weber. all the timings are spot on. when cranking all it seems to do is to blow a puff out the top of the carb every so often. we have been cranking it for the last half an hour and its not having any of it. has anyone got any ideas of what could be wrong and things i could try? thanks. nathan
You have not the timing spot on then. it is very very very common for people to get the timing 180 deg out, especially the ignition timing
1) remove rocker cover
2) turn engine by hand to TDC no 1 the camshaft should be in this position
3) if it doesn’t turn the engine 1 revolution
4) remove dizzy cap and note where rotor arm is pointing put this lead to cyl No 1.
firing order is 1-3-4-2 put rest of leads on accordingly, then it’ll run
hey thanks for the quick post i have tried what you said and it will still not work. when the head was removed it was not timed up stupid I know.
I have timed it up as per auto data. so auxillary and bottom pulley meet one another with the rotor arm pointing towards timing mark and the cam pulley facing upward. i take it this is correct. i have put the leads on correctly so when each piston is on its compression stroke the dizzy is pointing to the correct lead. i am compleatly stumped for ideas. do you think the dwel angle could be out aftyer replacing the head enough to not alloow the car tio start. also could it be somthing to do with the carb not fueling it enough on the new cam? any help would be very much apreciated. thanks
Have you checked the valve timing? if the spark timing is ok then this is the most likely problem, and it can cause spitting back through the carb.
the only fueling adjustment needed for your cam will be to richen the idel mixture to get things running smoother it’ll start and run on the std settings idel may be a bit bumpy tho.
Q) do you have a good spark ? ( pull the king lead and crank enigne you shoudl see a ggod strong blue spark and hear it )
when your timeing marks say the enigne is TDC, take No 1 plug out and see if the piston is actualy at the top, sometimes timeing marks can lie if the engine has been fiddeld with in the past
Put about a teaspoonful of neat petrol down the carb inlet, then try & start it, if it fires & runs for a few seconds then its a fuel problem, if it doesnt run then its a (spark/valves) timing problem.
Have you checked compression on the cylinders?
Do you have the earth straps all bolted up properly and know that they’re good?
hey ive gone back to basics i have made sure 100% that timing is right correct valve is being opened at correct time and that the ignition timing is correct. i then checked the spark and there wasnt one so i have baught a new coil and now have a spark. she now will fire a litle bit every so often so i am about to go out and richen the mixture see if that gets her started.
Did you get the correct coil? there are 2 different ones and it will run as rough as buggery with the wrong one fitted
i got it from kevin coopers how do i tel the diference. i still cant get it to run im realy stumped now. the cam ive put in it is essentialy for a gti so fuel injection do u think this could be it. but i supose if this was the case a gti head wuldnt work at all.
sounds as though your timing is still out,is the dizzy timed up properly?ie notch on pulley lined up with notch on crank pulley…check your earth straps too
if my timing was out sureley i would be hitting pistons with valves? im going to try and static time the dizzy tomorrow see if that makes any diference. all my earth straps are present i think one from weber to the rocker and one from the coil to the rocker and obviously battery earth.
The 1800 8 valver is not an interference engine, so the valves wont hit the pistons what ever you do.
Gti cams and heads cause no running probelms meany of us have run or are running them.
he’s talking about your ignition timing not your valve timing i think…
I had similar running problems with getting my syncro g60/16v mishmash to run – i don’t know if this is an “approved” approach but I was running out of options and there wasn’t really any documentation we could refer to. i found the only way to sort it was to have a friend trying to start the car and i move the dizzy/timing around at the same time – having loosened it just enough to move smoothly by hand. Short of a couple of impressive pops when we were WAY off we then sussed the problem quickly and got it running. I know the 8v arrangement is different but I’m sure it could be done relatively easily or does the intermediate shaft cause problems?
We were also trying to figure out of the valve timing was out or if it was the ignition timing.
You valve timing should be easy to check – that’s the whole tdc-and-little-marks-on cams bit and making sure the rotor points to cyl1 etc, and that’s where you’d start to damage valves etc if it’s out but not on a gti as danny says and besides you can check it doesn’t jam up by turning the motor over by hand after you’ve fiddled with the timing belt but before you turn the key. Then if its gonna lock up you’ll know beforehand.
hope that helps a bit,
B
