Hi – what the hell are these??!
I had a similar issue with the bolts that hold the inner CVās together ā after fannying around with initially allen keys and then standard torx drivers I eventually discovered they are a multi-spline (XZN(!)) drive, not a standard torx. I am now the proud owner of a draper set of impact bits for these…. Bleedin Germans..
Just about ready to lift the syncro engine out ā the only thing holding it in are the three engine mounts and the propshaft.
The bolts in question are like a torx but in reverse ā the head of the bolts appear to be splined.
I need to know what they are called asap and where I can get a socket to undo them…

As far as I was aware you just need a normal 12-point socket to undo them. Hope that helps
Hi – weirdly that may be the case – all of my sockets are of the ‘solid wall’ type, i.e. the inside of the socket is the same shape as the top of the nut, with flat sides so they grip the nut better.
A 12 point socket might do it, I’ll get one and have a go. If anyone else can shed some light I’d be appreciative – there are plenty of people on here who have had gearboxes out etc!
BTW – did you ever get the 16v on throttle bodies running?

ah ok if you’ve not tried that then the 12 point socket should do the trick – I’m pretty sure I had the same conversation with Les Burt a year or two ago…(except I had the sockets but never thought to try it )
the syncro did indeed run but has been stuck in surgery since to get the bodywork legal. I changed jobs along the way and haven’t had as much free time recently so it’s all having to wait while I get the basics sorted properly…
Those propshaft bolts just need a regular 10mm 12-point socket.
