Apologies if this has been discussed before anywhere. I’m sure it must have been (in fact I’m sure I asked this on here before), but I didn’t find anything even when searching archived posts.
I wish to fit a KR engine into my LHD Syncro and I’d appreciate advice on where to obtain a custom manifold, or adapt an existing manifold and/or downpipe, to enable this to be done.
I have been in contact with G-Werks here in the UK regarding a possible group order of four-branch manifolds for a 16V engine into a LHD Syncro. They said that it was a real possibility that this would go ahead. However to give me a backup option, is there any other company in or outside of the UK that readily supplies a suitable manifold?
Or, would it be feasible to modify the existing downpipe from my G60 Syncro so that it will accept a standard KR 16V cast exhaust manifold?
What did the 16V/G60 Limited use? Did this just use a special VW Motorsport manifold together with a standard G60 Syncro downpipe?
Many thanks in advance,
Trev
The std 16v manifold wont allow enough room for the downpipes as it interferes with the transfer box, there are other firms that will make a one off system, see here http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=506
Thanks Chris.
I thought that it would be possible to make a new downpipe that bends around so that its flange is positioned directly above the propeller shaft so that it’ll mate with a stock KR manifold but, looking at some picures of my Syncro’s engine bay, I realise this is probably very difficult or impossible.
Do you think that there is any real benefit in upgrading the downpipe section?
Given the fact that stainless aftermarket manifolds can get very hot and crack and so on, together with the fact that space down there is a lot more critical with the propeller shaft (and of course I don’t want the damn thing getting overheated) I’m tempted to retain the factory downpipe and just have a custom top manifold made. Does this sound sensible? Any ideas what the Limited used?
If you were doing this Chris how would you be tempted to do it? Would you ditch all VW parts and have an entirely custom system?
Thanks
Trev
The LHD Syncro uses something like this (well mine does anyway)
Right Hand item is std LHD G60 Syncro Manifold & Downpipe,
it shouldn’t be to difficult to adapt something like this to a RHD 16 valver []
Hiya Chris,
Interesting pictures!
Fortunately my Syncro is LHD, not RHD.
The manifold and downpipe that you show there on the right looks just like the one on my G60 Syncro.
So what you are showing there on the left appears to be a standard G60 Syncro downpipe that has been chopped, and transformed into a four-branch manifold. So I see – I could make something like that but to fit the 16V. Did you make this yourself? Where are the bits of tube obtained from?
In order to attempt this I think I need to obtain a spare downpipe so I can avoid chopping up my original one. I often see these on eBay.de from the Passat G60. Are they the same?
Many thanks
Trev
yes they are exactly the same, btw I am not sure if I have a spare G60 downpipe here I will have a look for you this week
If you do Chris then I’ll cross your palm with much silver.
What you do is to combine something like this,
with something like this,
And hopefully end up with something like this,
or in your case a 16V version []
Chris,
I have managed to find a Rallye downpipe available for sale from a friend here, which I could use to make this manifold.
I’m thinking of using stainless steel custom pieces from someone like Jetex (http://www.jetex.co.uk/) who can supply straight and angled tubular steel sections by mail order.
Many thanks again – you’ve given me an excellent suggestion here
Trev
Do I need this thing?
Thats for 2wd
I mean the Syncro equivalent of that part, does it have to be used?
Not if you have an alternative, like a straight through pipe or something similar?
