re: Something about limiting engine conversions

I’m trying to find out a bit more about this – my dad mentioned that he’d seen something on the telly about the .gov wanting to limit or no longer allow engine conversions (or mods too possibly?), For Our Own Good of course.

We don’t have a TV so I’m unlikely to catch the news another time – does anyone have any more info on this? Did he get the wrong end of the stick? It this another Well-Thought-Out set of unenforcable Nanny-State rules which will leave everyone none-the-wiser or do I need to start looking for properties in a more engine-conversion-friendly country?

I heard something about services only being done by the manufacturers! But admittedly I only heard second hand.

I haven’t heard anything about limiting engine conversions, and as you say it would be very difficult to enforce. What would happen to all the racing and rallying clubmen?

There was some mention of this after the guy rolled his Land Rover and killed one of his kids, but what occured was covered by current legislation.

I’d be interested to see if anything was raised on this subject.

Hmmm…..

What is stopping these youngsters buying something like the Vauxhall Monaro, an MG ZT 260 or an american muscle car instead? Most of these are quick cars and the muscle cars are hopeless around corners!!!!

Although the AA state that 500 youngsters die in RTAs in a year, they don’t say how many of the vehicles involved are NOXed. I would think that less than 1% of them are modified. I would think that a larger proportion are either nicked or are not insured/MOT’d etc.!

I realised that at the end it says “there are no plans to change legislation at this time” so basically it’s just the AA having a whynge at having to tow broken cars home from Santa Pod.

ban no2 they will just buy cars with bigger engines, then they chould go fast all the time. so changign the rules will acheve not much really.

they choudl shove a bhp/ton limute on ppl for 1st yr of driveing that would probaly be most effective as most cars i seen in the scrappy arn’t modifyed

that’s not a bad idea – although isn’t that actually what happens already though already to some extent in that insurers make it expensive for cars with lots of bhp…

i’ll disagree with that, i managed to insure a volvo 2.3 turbo for a lot less than a 1.2 nova saloon when i first started driveing

that’s kinda what I meant danny – it’s self regulating to some degree in that new drivers will pay more – and especially for something with nos on it. When you first started driving you simply wouldn’t have been able to insure a turbo/nos car whereas now where (i presume) you have some NCB and a lot more experience insuring a turbo is no probs…self regulating based on experience.

What they don’t mention is that of those 500 young people who die in RTAs – how many of them have drink or other substances in their system or were just driving like twats – perhaps they should ban those things? oh they did – didn’t work…blame it on modded cars instead

yes it is sort of self regulating (that’s if mods are declared ) the volvo i got very shortly after the nova and got money back from insurance company ( never quite worked out how they managed to think the volvo was less risky tho i sopose it did look like a volvo )

but yes think the aa is just bleeting
