Hi,
I’m still cleaning up my gti to sell and as part of it I got a new set of locks so that it only needed one key.
I’ve had to do stuff on the steering column anyhow so it’s all nicely in bits and I have the cast metal ignition bit out but can’t figure out how to remove the barrel itself.
It looks like there’s a metal bit where the steering lock mechanism is which is forced in place. It looks like if I removed it I may not get it back on.
Anyone got any ideas? I could live with two keys but would prefer one.. At least now the passenger door lock and boot locks can be opened with a key – before it was only via central locking.
I’ll upload pics once I’m done outside…
Ok this is the bit I’m on about – finger pointing at the panel whihc looks like it could be removed, but it might well be a one-way process.
Any ideas?
Thats a very early lock carrier, etka says it was replaced by p/n 321 905 851D on 30-06-1986,
I cant remember exactly but I think if you insert the key then the the lock barrel should turn further (anti clockwise) than when it is fitted on the car then you can slide it out towards you, not absolutely sure on this though, but it has to be worth a try, please post results.
hmm no i tried that along with mild tapping, twisting etc… looks like I’m going to be left with two keys still… but at least they’ll open all the doors
To remove the ignition lock barrel you need to drill a small hole in the body of the lock, you then push a small screwdriver or something with a point through the hole to release a spring clip inside, the lock can then be pulled out with the key. It sounds hard but is actually fairly easy as the metal is only thin in the area you need to drill. The process is described in the golf haynes manual and it gives the measurements for where you need to drill. The clip you need to push in quite wide so even if you don’t get the hole in the exact place Haynes advise you can still push the clip down.
hmm good shout – it’s actually back together again now but that bugged me and by now I should be able to drop it out in a few mins so may have a go. I actually know the clip you mean and drilling a hole and pushing it in would do the job.
I’d thought it twists somehow but didn’t have any joy and didn’t really want to experiment too much cos the only other ignition barrel I have is on my syncro (where all the locks match) and I didn’t want to have to rob it from there.
I think you can drill the hole with the steering lock still in the car, you would just need to remove the wheel and plastic cover.
hmm ok just got more tempting! I’ll let you knwo how I get on today
