Being new to the forum and owning a golf mk2 syncro, I have been trying to gather information on parts i need for a 20vt conversion.
The worst item as I see it seems to be the gearbox and transfer box. I can’t quite get my head round which box is the best for the job. It looks like there are a few you can use but which is going to last. Haldex is a bit out of my league. Any help would be much appreciated.
The 02c from a Passat g60 is probs your best bet, you could use a Rallye box transfer case it is stronger but they have seperate oil and angle drives can suffer oil starvation.
The very last Rallye boxes had oilways and the cast iron transfer box casing, but you dont see many of them about, and while I do have one of them in my magic shed, it is not for sale as I am using it with my 2 litre kompressor motor conversion.
Have you considered the route for your exhaust on this 20VT conversion?
Thanks for the replies, the mist is starting to clear!!
Does anyone have one of these boxes or know of one going, other than Chris that is? If you change your mind Chris let me know.
From reading the site, you must have some good toys in your shed.
As for the exhaust Diamond my plan was to get the major part of the work done and then hand it over to somebody like Storm to custom build it and set up the mapping.
I am also thinking of picking up a cheep 4 door 16v donor. It looks like it would be cheeper than buying all the bits,ie rear disc conversion, master cylinder, recaro interior etc.
Just read the brake conversion with photo’s how good is that. Just need someone to do it on the 20vt!
Another quick point I am still open to a vr6 conversion would this box be easier to get hold of?
Is this box compatible,
you need the rear diff to go with that CSR transfer box, unless you change the transfer box and rear diff to G60 rallye item
nutter this is getting out of hand. Will the passat rear diff drop in to the mk2. Have you done this conversion by any chance?
Out of interest if I got hold of a vr6 passat syncro would the parts be compatible?
Oh no just seen a passat W8 and that would do very nicely. Does anyone know if this has been done before?
The 2wd rear discs are totally different & wont fit the Syncro.
The VR6 gearbox (transfer box) is only compatable with the VR6 rear diff.
The Passat rear diff is identical to the Golf one, I am running one on mine, the VC unit had larger diameter drive lugs & that is the only difference
Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply,
Would I be better off with a VR6 passat syncro if I could find one and use the bits from that. I am trying to make it as easy as possible to locate all the bits in one find and passats generally have an easier life.
I don’t suppose you have heard of a gearbox code (ayo), I cant find any reference to it.
Your advice is much appreciated
Yes, you could source everything in one hit with a Passat VR6 Syncro, you would need to use the Golf front subframe & steering rack (unless you wanted a wide track front?) and shorten or swap the propshaft as the Passat one is too long, also the handbrake cables would need changing for the Golf Syncro ones, other than that though you should be fine.
Should I be looking for a particular year ie are the later passats compatible?
According to ETKA any Passat VR6 Syncro (motor code ABV) from late 94 to early 97 will be ok.
i have a vr6 syncro transfer box and rear diff available http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2019
Thanks vr6will, I am going to try and source a complete car as I think this will save money in the long run. It’s all the bits and pieces that start to ad up.
