What parts do I need to convert a standard Syncro to a Country?
And where can I get them second hand (I assume they are no longer available new)?
Also I would like some electric mirrors and I understand that some Golfs were fitted with headlamp washers!
Can anyone help?
As for converting a normal Syncro to a Country, please forget it and just buy one, VW didnt just jack up the suspension you know, there is so much work involved which includes fitting a full length ladder type chassis frame between the body & the front & rear subframes,
also there are loads of them for sale in Germany & at not excessive prices either. try here
how are the headlamp washers fitted, would they fit on a normal road golf?

Yes, if you can find a full set in working order, they will transfer directly over. []
Right, I’ve found a couple of Country’s in Germany that I think may be suitable, but… ( and this is a big but) … how do I go about finding the right one?
The few that I have seen are spread all over Germany and will take a week, or more, to go and see them, without the problem of my complete lack of German!!!!
Does anyone have any advice for someone undertaking this task for the very first time? How do I ask about Service History, cam belt change, etc.? How do go about doing an insurance check on a vehicle as I believe they don’t keep their registration numbers between owners? Are there any internet sites that I can do this sort of check on German vehicles?
And then… How easy is it to import a vehicle into the UK? Any pitfalls I need to look out for?
I see that I might just have to fork out up to Euro5000 on a vehicle that I have only seen in pictures. Looks like I’ll have to suck it and see[]
As all 3 of of my Golf Syncros were imported from Germany I know a little bit about it,
the German export quite straight forward if a little tedious, you basically neet an export tüv (MOT) some temporary number plates and a 1 month German insurance & thats it.
Most German car owners will have every piece of paper ever issued to them relating to their car, it is a tüv requirement that when the car goes in for its test that every modification is listed and that you have the paperwork to show that the mod(s) are tüv approved fod that model of car, even if fitting non factory wheels or a towbar you must keep the paperwork with the car or no test certificate
Here is the ADAC (German AA) website page on exporting a car
Suprise, suprise, its in German [] but you can translate it paragraph by paragraph here [] http://babelfish.altavista.com/
Well, I almost became a fully fledged member yesterday[:0]
I went all the way to Koln in Germany (mit trailer) to buy a Golf Country. However it turned out that it wasn’t quite as described and there were a few things wrong with it, despite my brother (who lives in Germany and speaks the lingo) asking all the right questions. So I offered him what I thought it was worth, but he was adamant that he was not going to budge. So I turned around and went back home[]
Oh well, back to the drawing board[!]
