Pinking dosn’t always happen with a lost of power, pinking is a tinkling sound when the engine is under load. in crude terms the ignition fires and the mixture ignites so far before TDC that the piston is still on the way up when the bang tries to make it go down and the piston rattles (tinkling). This puts tremendous pressure on the piston crown and will punch a hole through it either sooner or later.
best power is always with max ignition advance, ie pinking then backed off a bit.[]Audi DoodyMembergot to agree with that, weel worth a try first. Years ago TSR set up my car on their rolling road, they tweeked the ignition from 6deg BTDC to nearly 10deg BTDC and the car drove so much better and had more power too…
however beware of pinking, any hint of it and adjust it back a bit and try again..do not leave it thinking I’ll do that next week, pinking can kill an engine in no time at all.
if the engine really likes one setting but it pinks a small amount then try using 98/99 octane fuel, that might get rid of the pinking and solve the problem.Audi DoodyMemberSorry, clear as mud again, what I ment was fit the lambda probe in the exhaust, just don’t connect it up but its there for later if needed.

Audi DoodyMemberHi Eddy,
I think the tyre size is wrong but to check if you know the orignal wheel/tyre size then go to :-http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresiz2.html
this will tell you if the tyres you have are within the correct range for your speedo.

Audi DoodyMemberHi I’m looking to make one of these controllers but I need the control motor and temp sender thats on the rear diff. With these I should be able to make up a controller with a dash display and either switched or variable control with disconnect on braking if reqd. would take me about 6 months I guess and would be helpful if someone was interested in being a guinea pig.
Its not going to have all the sensor inputs, so no abs or steering angle sensors, just a basic 2wd,partial to the rear or 4wd option with some safety/failsafe stuff buit in.
is there much interest?can’t see the bits costing more than £100 tops
anyone?
MikeAudi DoodyMemberNo contest
4WD []with all that power the weight is not an issue, so use the 4wd for better power transfer and better handling and best of all more fun!
Audi DoodyMemberSorry Chaz got to agree with Spike, if you had hit a car when you were out, tough on them is it?
Audi DoodyMemberThe problem is the input shaft is directly in front of the filling hole, trying to fill it too quickly means the oil hits the shaft, can’t drain into the diff fast enough and comes back out of the filling hole.
The whining could be coming from anywhere, diff, cv joints, wheelbearings, always difficult to diagnose without swapping parts
From what you say it does sound as if the flange seals have gone but might be unrelated to the noise!mike
Audi DoodyMemberHi as an add on to the above, with a longer length of tube, the syringe can be used to draw off oil via the dipstick tube if you should overfill the engine oil.

Audi DoodyMemberWhat is it with all these flatland farmer boys wanting to break all our precious syncro gear?
go on Nutter4x4 steer him straight to haldex from the get go or better still use some 4×4 tractor gear, that should hold 500bhp!
Good luck with your quest crazyfarmer, you’re gonna need itcheers Mike
Audi DoodyMembernothing new there then
