ModeratorHappy Birthday to us! We are 10 years old (on line) Today,
I dread to think the number of people worldwide who would have scrapped their Syncro if we had not have been here to help,
This might sound silly, but apart from family, commitments etc, I consider this site to be one of the better things I have done with my life & yes I am very proud of it & us all!
This site was started when someone (LD50) in England could not find a Golf 2 Syncro rod change gearbox, they went on VW Vortex & my name cropped up when jman in America suggested that he might be better looking in Europe rather than America & said to contact me,
At that time I had only just bought my first G2 Syncro & what a disaster that was!
if it could leak out of somewhere then it leaked, the cooling water leaked, the washer water leaked, the power steering fluid leaked, the engine oil leaked, the gearbox oil leaked & even the transfer box & rear diff were showing signs of weeping!
at that time I could have bought a same year comparable 2WD 140 bhp 16 valver for about 2/3rds of the price of this,& I was on a big big learning curve, as almost nothing I knew about the Golf 2 was applicable to the Syncro,
when I was contacted from the UK via Vortex about a gearbox, long story short yes, I could find one & ld50 came over with his father to collect it,
it was then suggested that ‘WE’ set the site up as there was very little to no knowledge over golf Syncro models anywhere.
Hopefully we have managed to change that?Chris S
ModeratorThe TRW rack has a smooth surface center tube,
while the ZF rack has raised cross rib stiffening,
a look on ebay will show the differences.Chris S
ModeratorMay I say to togran & ahusyncro, that we are an English language website & while we have members that have a different mother language that we expect all posts to be in English!
please its not rocket science! []

there is no separate allocation for filling coffers, it takes oil from the gearbox, rear axle shall have refills Inga on the left side just above the drain plug.
ahussyncr. you have like half right
some of the early editions actually own filling for allocation checkout

ModeratorI don’t know about the quality either, but consider that VW want just under 300 quid for it! [

ModeratorWhen did you last change the brake fluid/bleed the brakes?
as if there is any air in the system it can cause all sorts of weird & wonderful things to happen. [}

do you know which master cylinder or ABS system you have?
A photo of the M/C might help if you are not sure.

ModeratorASU code gearbox is from a Rallye & was made in 2 versions, early type without oilways, & the later type with oilways.
Your full gearbox code indicates you have have early type box which does NOT have the 2 oilway feeds into the transfer box (see photo)
btw all Rallye transfer box casings were made out of cast iron, rather than cast ally of the Passat transfer box
Early type (without oilways suitable for your gearbox) on the right.

ModeratorAll the O20 boxes use the same 20/21-21/20 ratio in the transfer box & rear diff.
Chris S
ModeratorThe ABS wiring is a totally apart harness, the relays etc just clip on top of the fuse box.
