could maybe be one of the little one-way valves?
ld50MemberNice one Trev. Sadly no use to me but I’m sure someone will find them a good home
ld50Memberyeah I figured I thought it might be a good time to broach the updates thing though
ld50Memberhamster food…
btw re site speed.. I’m working on something which would convert this forums to a more up to date framework which would allow all sorts of clever stuff like uploading pics, member photo galleries and stuff all under one login. It’s actually not a million miles away from what TC used to go on about with joomla, it’s a similar framework, but this is based on code run on our own server which we have full control over, as well a control over development of new features etc, but without having to write every damn last bit of code myself which takes forever.
It’ll mean me migrating the forum from one type to another and then to another again and mean changing database platform, scripting language as well as operating system, so it’s no small task at all, but i’ve built a prototype community site on the new platform which is of a similar interest group to vwsyncro and it’s working brilliantly (www.onlinedrifting.com/?trk=vwsyncro).
We already did some initial tests of the syncro site under the new platform (drupal) when i first started messing with it and it looked ok, but I’ve since spent 6 months or so mucking about with it on a few prototype sites and see how it runs in practice and I reckon I’ve formulated a plan for this site.
I’ve even done a test migration (the “and to another framework again” bit) and I know that works, it’s the first bit and the preparation which is tricky.
the new platform would also allow better spam filtering, a full private messaging system, tagging, twitter updates, fivestar rankings like on youtube, you name it…
Have a look at the onlinedrifting site – see what you think. It’s built as a files type repository for folks on a drifting forum I’m on and is not massively different from what we’d need to add here, just with the forums integrated.
more as I have it….
ld50Memberhamstered from hampstead. word
ld50Memberwell I found you can feed the hamsters a mix of normal food mixed with about 5% H2O2 and they go right off their nut…
ld50Memberwell the other thing I needed to check was a wobbly wheel, and in the process of locating a spare wheel to test with I found the old loom we pulled out of the syncro, complete with the small section with the 3-pin plug for the fan. So I *think* we’re good to go.
I’ve ordered a 3-pin fan so will report back once i know for sure one way or the other
ld50Memberyeah chris is right – there’s something causing it and I think it’s to do with the database system we’re using. Nothing wrong with it as such but there’s several other sites on the server using a similar one and I think the disk access is too much so it needs a kick every now and then till I’ve figured out what’s causing the lockup.
We are actually working on some stuff which would sort that quite convincingly
ld50Memberok well I’ve gotta check something else out first on the car tomorrow but if VW don’t come up with anything I’ll give you a shout if that’s ok?
ld50Memberdoh so it’s as simple as getting one from vw… doh – never thought of that! Cheers

ld50Membervery “rat look” so far – am liking the dual air-intakes at the front
ld50Memberah ok so I guess on the nut it’s part no? It’s curerently got a new pair of the ones for this motor which I bought yesterday… you saying they’re possibly wrong too?
ld50Memberso – new sensors fitted but it still didn’t seem right, so i did a bit more digging online and found this page:
http://www.clubgti.com/FORUM/showthread.php?p=1130317
“Ok brief summary of how it works, the 1.8bar sender(white collar, yellow wire) this controls the buzzer the sender is normally open and when it gets the right pressure it shuts and grounds the wire stopping the buzzer going off, this circuit operates above 2krpm, if theirs a problem then the buzzer will come on and the led will flash. The other sender (black collar, blue wire) this controls the led, this senders normally closed, in normal operation you put ignition into the first position and the led flashes, when you start the car it should get the right pressure, the sender opens and breaks the circuit to the led and it goes out.”
What’s interesting is my sensors have always been connected the other way around… so white collar had blue wire, black collar had yellow wire. I’ve always faithfully put them back they way they were at the start but am wondering if that was wrong this whole time – can anyone confirm/deny the collars<->wires relationship?
The behaviour of the car seems more reasonable with the wires the way round they are in that post, but it means now my problem is flashing LED from/at idle, not warning buzzer at 3k rpm. It stutters rapidly at 900rpm and flashes steadily above that. Strangely no buzzer above 3k.
In any case have ordered a new oil pump to be on the safe side and postponed the door-fetching till next weekend…
Ah and the VDO oil pressure gauge I got to test needs a vdo sender so I guess
thanks for the help all
ld50Memberah and there was me wondering how it worked. That’s great and gives mr a plan which is independent of other people’s input which i like.
Good shout cheers
ld50MemberOk well i did some more testing and as far as I can tell its the rear of the two sensors on the oil-filter mount which is at fault (or something in that chain).
As far as I know that’s the one whcih should alarm if there’s not enough pressure at 2800rpm or thereabouts and I was able to recreate the failure situation easily. I rev to 3k, trigger the buzzer and ease off, buzzer stays going. I do the same but then leg it to the front and touch the sensor wire to ground and the buzzer goes quiet.
Curently the behavious is the same whether I connect the sensor or not, with the same effect of going silent when touched to ground.
Sounds like the sensor right? ok so I managed to find 3 other similar sensors from other motors I’ve got kicking around and they all behaved the same way. Admittedly none of them are new so it’s possible they’re all dead but seems unlikely somehow… which has confused me.
Either way I’m gonna get a new pair of sensors from VW tomorrow hopefully and then we’ll see whether it’s actually the sensor or if there’s another issue in between.
As a precaution I’m also hopefully picking up a n electric pressure guauge which shoudl tell me if there’s a reading from the sensor… in which case maybe it’s the wiring or the dash cluster.
What I haven’t tested is putting a different sensor to ground and seeing if that does the same thing but I will tomorrow…
cheers for help so far all
