lloydyParticipant
Sorry mate, it turned out i made a miscalculation and didnt need the spacer, so the normal bolts fitted. You can have my mk4 ones for postage if your happy cutting 3-4mm off the end
lloydyParticipantDitto Andy, just bought them. Two of the right hand ones, as they are Gemo and have the ‘ball’ on the caliper end. the left hand one heritage sells has the same end as the ones i have now and is more expensive. I reckon these will solve the issue, should do anyway as the ones i have are 55mm longer!
lloydyParticipantBeen out driving it this afternoon, after giving the brakes another bleed. Still not 100% but a LOT better. Does drive very nice with no creaks or groans 😀 and i think the ride height is quite nice too..
one thing that isnt right is the handbrake. Rallye cables are meant to be 1600mm long, after adjusting mine they seem too long. im at the end of the adjustment on the cable and it still isnt really tight enough. A bit of research shows all the aftermarket rallye cables are listed at 1655mm long!? So, that would explain that!!
Golf3 syncro cable are meant to be 1592, but aftermarket ones seem to be listed at 1600mm… BUT, the outer length is 200mm longer on the rallye ones 1195 vs 995, so that could possibly make them too short… my head hurts!
Vw heritage sell rallye cables listed at near £40 each! but they are 1600mm… Not sure what ones to try, or wether i can do anything with the ones i have..Attachments:
lloydyParticipantIt’s alive!!!
Gave the brakes a gravity bleed with the bias valve held open, need to give it a go with the power bleeder now to get rid of what should be some trapped air and return some pedal to me.
On a strange note, it really felt like the brakes were binding, jacked up the rear and the wheel wouldnt move.. Traced it to the spacer that i fitted to the caliper carrier now making the carrier hit the disc!? God knows how that happened!?… Anyway, removed them and all is good. Handbrake adjust up nicely, just need to give it another tweak now its settled. Now just all the gremlins to iron out…Attachments:
lloydyParticipantIt’s coming along at a good pace! Last bits of brake pipes put in ( from bias to front to rear pipes)
Just adjust handbrake and fill up with brake fluid and it’s all a go go!Attachments:
lloydyParticipantCouple small jobs today due to rain, handbrake cable hooked up and secured. And the vac and breather lines attached to the freewheel. After sticking the breather up into the chassis (as it was when taking apart) i found an old thread on here where its meant to be put into the harness sleeve. So i think thats a good idea, will change that shortly..

lloydyParticipantThis last section of prop was surprisingly hard to get in!! Lots of curse words were uttered..
Put on with new CV boot and nice Rallye counterweight donut ?Attachments:
lloydyParticipantRear dampers on with (in case you’ve forgot..) new genuine springs and powerflex bushes. Rear end of prop tomorrow i think, or connect handbrake cables up.
Question on that.. my old one were routed any old way, i presume the correct way is over the beam and down between the ‘Y’ of the trailing arm?
Also noticed looking at the pics that ive dented the disc splash guard a bit… will have to straighten that out

lloydyParticipantIt’s in!!
Now just the many bits and pieces to sort ?Attachments:
lloydyParticipantCheers LD50, coming together now. Weather dependent hopefully I’ll bolt the rear beam on tomorrow. I’m going to have to take the wheels off again I reckon, either that or try to jack the rear of the car higher so I can roll it under. (Mudguards are in the way!)
Just want to get it on now, run the last bit of brake lines and get it mobile again!
I’d agree on the discs to the eye look thicker than 10mmlloydyParticipantI reckon they must be, haven’t measured but that can be the only answer. I didn’t mean to get them but I guess I wrote down the wrong numbers. All good though as i ended up with a better disc. As for being unable to post, I just find sometimes the forum doesn’t let me post. Normally lasts 2-3 days then it’s ok again. part numbers are on the brake topic now, along with a few pics
lloydyParticipantTa, nothing too difficult. Just like it is in the pics I posted, my arms didn’t have any holes for disc brake backplates just the big ones for drum backplates. I drilled and tapped 3 new smaller holes, so, no the holes don’t line up.
Take your time marking up the arm to fit them as you want the disc centered nicely, it would kill my OCD if the backplate was slightly off.. 😀lloydyParticipantSometimes you just need more length….
Stock MK2 bolts only had about 2-3 threads engagement due to the spacer I used. So had to track down some longer ones of the same thread pitch. Only ones I could find were off a MK4, but they were 3mm too long. Picked up a set of 4 from VW for £4 chopped off 3mm and hey presto!Attachments:
lloydyParticipantThanks for that, mine seem to be pretty tight without them in. I’ll see what is like when it’s fitted and everything is in its proper place.
I’ve just been out and picked up the MK4 carrier bolts and chopped 3mm off the end. Fit perfect and proper thread engagement, so I can sleep easy now ?
Here’s a pic of the MK2 ones and the cut down MK4.Attachments:
lloydyParticipanti couldnt even find an answer on orientation of the bushes, as one end is thicker than the other
