I have use of 12ft trailer, it may be to much hassle to arrange depending on timing distance tho
no such userParticipantI’m in Bristol. I have an a-frame, I DON’T have a car trailer, hence not able to move a Golf that doesn’t roll.
no such userParticipantOh, if it doesn’t roll then it’s a bit of a bit problem, as I can’t A-frame it away.
no such userParticipantHave you run a proper cooling system flush through the system?
The motor might have only done that many miles, but how long has it been around? Possible corrosion in the waterways?
Is the stat a genuine VW one? Even if it is, I’d replace it for good measure.
no such userParticipantI had same problem before it was headgasket
My theory is air leaked from the headgasket tends to collect in places like in the waterpump and cases the impeller to cavitate hence the airlock cant move on and the water pump dosen’t pump well till drop revs and the airlock gets chance to rise out and then the system sorts itself. I spent a whole weekend swearing at a PB untill I realised that the top tank bubbled lots if I held the revs up for a few minutes then let it drop back down to idle
no such userParticipantLes, Darren,
Maybe if there’s no interest in the shell I might be able to help out. If the shell rolls that would be ideal, as I can collect it and A-frame it back to my place to cut up. If it doesn’t, but there’s power where it is then maybe (MAYBE) I can haul down and cut out the relevant parts for Les.
Let me know…..
no such userParticipantthe wireing isn’t exactly hard, it very easy on a 90 speck it’s plug and play pre 90 theres a bit of fiddeling involved.
no such userParticipantIt’s a similar project. Mine should be running rear discs and a cable-change Passat Syncro/Golf Rallye ‘box, when it comes out of the garage. It is already running numerous other tweaks, too.
I was just cruising through the linked threads above and noticed that none of them really mentions wiring – after all, most 2l conversions are completed on Golf GTIs – no need to worry about that pesky wiring, when it’s all already done for you, now, is there?
As the MFA on the Passat says it’s running 35-37MPG average at the moment, I think it would be a pity to slap a carb on it. It’ll make the conversion more complex, but it should be easier to tweak and tune if it’s on injection. Now the question is really, leave the head on, or hunt out a crossflow head…… h’mmmmmm, decisions, decisions.
no such userParticipantLook at what I just picked up for £50 []
Not really a looker, is it?
Obviously this is what I’m here for:
Although it’s done 170k it still pulls very well and cleanly and will pull from 20mph in 4th – that’s the torque from the long-block, I guess.
[]
Work cut out now then!
no such userParticipantrallye item can be made to fit has been done before. just modifying bits of exhaust for syncro isn’t easy
no such userParticipantMaybe you could talk to Chris about freight forwarding?
no such userParticipantif you want a gearbox i have a homeless 020
no such userParticipantThe 18mm one is the rubbish one that everyone should replace with the Rallye item – this removes the pig-understeer that VW built into the Syncro out of the box.
Pointless fitting Powerflex ARB bushes, if your car’s still going to try to head towards the straight on whenever you get to a corner.
no such userParticipantIf it’s gone I have one on a shelf in Bristol.
no such userParticipantI tried 205’s on my mk2 and it din’t like them, it tended to aquaplane to easy for my liking and tyres occasionally touched the arches, my personal preferance is 195/50/R15’s in the Yoko A539 flavor
