Pictures from the day are here: http://diamondhell.com/index.php?option=com_rsgallery2&Itemid=29&catid=6
Enjoy – I know I did, even if it wasn’t fast it was great fun….. just not as good as a trip round the ‘Ring.
no such userParticipantI’d definately have a look at the tracking as well, it’s got all the symptoms of having it way out, do you find when cornering there is more understeer than expected especially when turning right? and the inside tyre squeaks sooner ?
3 deg negative on the front will really make it turn in but will chew tyres on the inside, factory setting is 0 – 0.5 deg iirc

Take out the passenger seat it must weigh 20 pounds or so, and replace the drivers seat with a fibreglass shell type one thats another 15 pounds or so allowing for the weight of the replacement. That costs money!
The lightening so far hasn’t cost anything, which is the beauty of it!
no such userParticipantChris, I’ll have to find out about some more track events and we’ll have to make sure your visit coincides with one of them. You can rent lids and I’ve left the passenger chair in!

Saturday will be AWESOME!

no such userParticipantThey all do that, sir. Even my T4 Syncro Caravelle and that’s a BIG clunk!
no such userParticipantHolmes, you have to consider that your springs and dampers will have been on your car probably since production – that’s 18-20 years ago. If you’re going to replace the springs then you should budget to replace all of the bushes and wearing parts you can when you strip the corners of your car down.
You will get far more benefit out of removing all of the slop out of the suspension than just reducing the ride height, which will just limit the amount of suspension drop you get when pushing on. If you limit that then you’ll ruin the capability of your car in the conditions that it excels in – bumpy, twisting, slippery B-roads.
Refresh the lot, add in a Rallye rear ARB and reap the benefits of your work!
no such userParticipantWell you shouldn’t have any problem pushing the bigger tyres about with the big TDI motor, but be aware that they’ll put your speedo out a bit. The Seikel kit seems pricey but it’s very well thought out and includes stuff like the spacers you need to put on the diff at the back to drop it slightly. If you don’t do this then your van will lift the inside wheel on corners as the CV joints will run out of travel and restrict the wheel travel. Running them like this would also make them wear faster as they’re at the end of their travel more.
The Seikel springs are progressive and also reduce in diameter at the end. There are King Springs available to lift your van, but as I understand it they give quite a harsh ride. You would also have to make up the diff-mount spacers on your own. Although the T4 kit seems pricey it’s a proper complete solution, not just a pair of springs. I was a bit hesitant about buying it, but I’m glad I did. I know that the knowledge about the diff has improved the handling of at least one person on King springs, too.
There are different springs for the T4 – heavy duty ones up to 1200kg load (vs 800kg standard), but I don’t think they’ll lift your ride height significantly. The Seikel kit also includes 15mm spacers, too.
To get an idea about the Seikel site run it through Babel Fish at Altavista.com or your favourite translation engine.

Welcome to VWSyncro.
no such userParticipantThe simple solution is probably to pick up the phone and speak to the guys at http://www.seikel.de/de/index.php .
The T4 kit is excellent – I have it on my bus and it gives a welcome increase in height. You could also look into fitting 4×4-type tyres (AT closed pattern tread would suit your requirements). These would give you a lift just from the tyre height, but might blunt the performance a little. Is it a TDI or 2.5 petroL? The front of the T4 is on torsion bars, so they simply wind up on nuts underneath. The Seikel T4 kit also includes re-valved Seikel-specific Bilstein dampers – they improved the ride on my ’98 bus quite a lot. Although it sits higher the ride is no ‘mushier’ and there’s no noticeable degradation in handling – VW vans have a nice low centre of gravity anyway.
The Golf might be a bit tougher, as it may be a novel request. Speak with Seikel though – it may not be the first time they’ve had the request and they may have a solution on the shelf!
no such userParticipantThere’s a fair number of mine up here: http://www.youtube.com/DiamondHell
Some of them are even of my Golf, not the T25s.
no such userParticipantIt’s all based on CO2 emissions and as Danny says, only after a certain date. Even my 1998 Syncro ‘velle has nothing to fear.
no such userParticipantno it dosen’t only affects cars made after a certan year think it’s 2001. it’s not unknown for a syncro to occasionaly think that it was a gti
